TOWN councillors in Haltwhistle are considering getting padded up for a game of cricket to in celebration of their county.

People across Tynedale and beyond will be flying the flag for Northumberland on May 28.

The which is being billed as Northumberland Day – a grand celebration of the county.

To mark the occasion, Haltwhistle Town Council is now looking at how people in the town can get involved.

Chairman Coun. Alan Sharp, and Coun. John Clark, are both cricket enthusiasts, and have both represented Haltwhistle at the crease.

Speaking at Monday’s town council meeting this week, Coun. Sharp said: “I think it would be nice if we could do something in the town and get people involved.

“We could put a cricket team forward for a match, and John could play.”

Coun. Clark then suggested a game of rounders, or quick-cricket, using a soft ball, would be more suitable.

Town clerk Susan Saunders said the event could include a cricket tea and a cake auction.
