Cyclists were on the road, which runs south from its junction with the B6530 to Bywell, when the incident happened at around 10.30am.
Ovingham man John Farrer who photographed the tree ( above ), before fire crews removed it, said: “When I arrived, there were a number of cyclists on the road and they said the tree had fallen just a few minutes previously.
“This could have been far worse, and we have to be thankful that nobody was hurt.”
