HEXHAM’S MP Guy Opperman has visited two Tynedale pubs which have seen major refurbishments by Heineken-owned Star Pubs and Bars in recent years.

The Golden Lion in Corbridge received a £230,000 new look while a revamp of the interior and exterior of the Globe in Hexham was completed last year.

Publican, Justin Mather has run the Globe for 16 years, making him one of the longest-standing licensees in Hexham.

“The pubs in the area are often changing hands, which is not helped by the tax burden carried by pubs, which is more than other small businesses.

“In addition to inflation and the increases in wage costs, my business rates are going to go
up by 20 per cent in April which will seriously impact on my business.

“It was good to talk to Guy and share these concerns. He understood the business and is a supporter of local pubs.”

Mr Opperman, who visited the pubs earlier this month, said: “It was great to meet Justin and Gill.

“Pubs are often such crucial focal points in the community, and it’s fantastic to see all the hard work both they and their staff, have put in, and how it is paying off.”
