YUMMY treats have filled the shelves of one of Corbridge’s vacant spaces with the opening of a pop-up shop specialising in bespoke cakes.

Build-a-Bake has been run by Corbridge woman Hannah Armstrong from her home in the village for over a year.

But Hannah was keen to get her own space, and has taken over the premises at 17 Watling Street, next to Capelli Hair Design, on a temporary basis.

With cakes, cupcakes, and tray bakes, as well as wedding cakes, occasion cakes and items for dessert tables, Hannah’s specialism has always been adding a personal touch to all of her sweet treats.

For example, tray bakes can be ordered in any flavour, or variety of flavours, with a personalised message.

Olympic diver Tom Daley even created his own flavour of Rocky Road, Kinder and Creme Egg.

Meanwhile, dessert tables can be ordered for events with any selection of goodies to choose from.

Hannah first started making cakes for family and friends, and when the business started to take off, she left her office job in Newburn to work full-time from home.

But the opportunity has now come along for Hannah to operate her business from the building on Watling Street, which is currently available to let, until somebody takes the premises on long-term.

She said: “I would love to have a shop there which is open five or six days a week and be able to do more dessert tables, more wedding cakes and more children’s parties.

The pop-up shop is an opportunity so see whether having a shop would work.

“It’s one thing people seeing pictures online, but it’s another thing them coming in and actually seeing the cakes and being able to talk to you about what they want.”

The shop, which opened on Saturday, July 14, had a booming trade on its first day and almost sold out within two hours. Hannah’s sister, Rachel, has been helping out by manning the shop when things are busy so Hannah can focus on baking.

The shop has also given Hannah the opportunity to sell individual portions of her popular brownies, blondies and other tray bakes.

“In the past, someone would have to get a whole tray, and it was more for an occasion, but a lot of people were saying ‘I want to be able to buy just one,’ so it is allowing me to do that.

“I’m also able to test different flavours to see which ones are popular and which ones don’t sell as well, so I’m trying to test as many flavours as possible.”
