A FUND-RAISING campaign has been launched in a bit to safeguard the future of the High Forest Show.

The annual event, at Allenheads, has been a mainstay for generations, taking over the centre of the village with its dog show, industrial tent and children’s attractions.

But two years ago, the show’s main sponsor withdrew its support, and now the event has lost its marquee supplier of 12 years.

Show treasurer Sue Wardle said a grand auction had been arranged for April 28, which she hoped would raise more than £1,000 ahead of this year’s show, which is scheduled to take place on September 1.

She explained: “The main sponsor used to pay for the marquee, but now we’ve lost both.

“We have seen significant increases in general costs, and we found out just before last year’s show that the marquee was no longer available.

“We had to hire another one at the last minute, which cost considerably more than it normally would.”

Mrs Wardle said the auction would raise funds for a marquee, as well as insurance, trophy engraving, the printing of show documents, and advertising costs.

She added: “There is a lot of enthusiasm for the show in the Allen Valleys.

“Alongside our usual fund-raising events, such as a plant sale and coffee morning, car treasure hunt and a barbecue, we hope this auction will ensure the continuity of the show for the next few years.”

Residents and businesses from across the district have already stepped in to offer pledges for the auction, with prizes ranging from a luxury hamper and a telescope to meals out, afternoon tea, golf and fishing trips and five-star accommodation.

The auction will take place at Allendale Village Hall, on Saturday, April 28.
