FALLING snow and icy conditions failed to thwart a fund-raising attempt for a famous Cumbrian cafe on Sunday.

A group of motoring enthusiasts had planned to make the journey from Hexham to the Hartside Cafe in a drive to raise cash for the beloved business which was destroyed by fire earlier this month.

Members from eight car and bike groups, including Great North Air Ambulance Car Cruise North East, had expressed an interest in taking part.

However the route was redrawn in light of the weather, and more than 30 hardy souls set off from the town’s Wentworth car park in a show of support for the popular meeting place.

Organisers Davey Tee, Mickey Cowen, Peter Matthews and Steve Brown suggested that everyone taking part could donate a few pounds to help towards the rebuilding costs.

“More than 30 cars turned out,” explained Peter. “We ended up going to Kielder due to the weather, but people still wanted to try and get out and donate for the cafe. It was a cracking day.”

Over £160 was collected in donations on the day.

The money will be added to the more than £1,000 already donated to a JustGiving page to help the business recover from the blaze.
