Northumberland County Council is considering changes to its school transport policy.

The proposed changes would affect free transport to faith-based schools.

Currently, children who meet eligibility criteria can receive free transport to their nearest faith school.

Councillor Guy Renner-Thompson, cabinet member for children and young people, said: "We are currently one of the only local authorities to still provide free transport to school for children based on faith.

"It is important we scrutinise everything when we are considering the Council’s spending, and the cost of providing home-to-school transport has increased significantly in recent years, particularly for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

"Changing the policy could help redirect resources and contribute towards reducing financial pressures – but we need to hear your views on this too."

The proposed changes would apply only to new applicants from September 2028.

The council has launched a public consultation running from October 19 to November 30.
