The main route from Bellingham to Kielder was closed to all traffic on April 20 for eight weeks to begin essential repairs to Tarset Bridge.
The closure will be in place from the junction with C200 Tarset Bridge to Stannersburn, heading eastwards for 250 metres in Northumberland.
Residents shared concerns about the closure of the main route from Bellingham to Kielder.
Cars and HGVs travelling through Bellingham are being diverted through Scotland, via Bonchester Bridge, to reach Kielder village.
However, due to the length of the diversion, cars are using the Hesleyside Road, or the Lanehead-Falstone road via Donkleywood.
Both routes are unsuitable for wagons, so HGVs must use the detour route to the A68 via Bonchester Bridge.
Residents shared concerns about the impact that the volume of extra traffic using the Hesleyside Road will have, including causing additional congestion, especially as the summer tourism period begins.
It is expected that the main road will only be closed until June 19. However, the order will remain in place until August 20.
An alternative route will be available whilst the closure is in force, being via C198, C199, B6320, A68, A6088, B6357, C200 and vice versa.
Changes will be made to the alternative routes if needed, and where possible, will be signposted accordingly.
A spokesperson for Northumberland County Council said the essential works to Tarset Bridge could only be completed during the spring/summer period.
“We would like to thank road users for their patience while we carry out essential works at Tarset Bridge, which will take place from April 20 for eight weeks.
"The works being undertaken to the bridge include waterproofing the bridge deck which needs to be undertaken in warm dry conditions, which limits the timing of the works to the spring/summer period.
“While we have explored different options to minimise the impact of this closure, particularly for HGV traffic, this is the most appropriate.
"The designated diversion route will be signed and is the only route appropriate for HGV traffic to use.
“Unfortunately, it is not possible to allow traffic to use the bridge until the scheme is complete and we ask that people use the diversion route put in place to allow the work to be carried out efficiently and safely.
"The council continues to invest in its highways and is carrying out essential maintenance to safeguard long-term integrity and reliability of our roads."
