A PlayZone is an all-weather playing surface, with fencing and floodlighting to provide a safe, outdoor recreational space for use year-round.
Northumberland County Council’s cabinet has secured the £629,000 expenditure needed to develop the new Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGAs) in Blyth and Haltwhistle.
The Football Foundation will contribute £437,000, while £123,000 will come from council funding and £69,000 from Section 106 developer contributions.
Northumberland County Council’s Sports Development Team has worked with locals to identify suitable sites and a lead community organisation to assume ownership and management of the sites once they are established.
The Blyth Playzone will be located adjacent to the Briardale Centre and managed by the Briardale House Youth and Community Project. It will replace the existing derelict MUGA.
The Haltwhistle Playzone will be next to, and managed by, Haltwhistle Swimming and Leisure Centre on land owned by Haltwhistle Town Council. The new facility will be slightly larger than a standard Playzone with a 3G surface.
The new facilities will be the latest of eight Playzones across Northumberland, with more in the pipeline.
Northumberland County Councillor Wendy Pattison, cabinet member with responsibility for Culture, Leisure and Tourism said: “With the help of funding support, we have already constructed eight Playzones across Northumberland which are helping residents become more physically active in their community.
"They are versatile and popular spaces which are being used for popular sports and activities including football, fitness, basketball and netball.
“It’s very welcome news that a further two Playzones are to be constructed – I am sure that once they are up and running, they will prove extremely popular with the children and families who use them.”
New Playzones have recently been developed in Alnwick, Amble, Newbiggin, Ashington, West Wylam, Bedlington, Hexham and Cleaswell Hill, Choppington.
Subject to planning permission it is hoped that work will start to develop the two new Playzones in autumn.
The Football Foundation has approved additional Playzones around the county, and the council will develop these once the Football Foundation opens its final application process.
