A planning application was submitted to Northumberland County Council by the company Neil Armour Architectural Services to create a 62-bay parking facility at The Orchards off Main Street in Ponteland town centre.
The full application is for the proposed formation of a pay-and-display car park providing 62 parking spaces, including accessible bays, with associated access, circulation areas, landscaping and ancillary works.
Located within Ponteland Conservation Area, the site is open land used informally for vehicle parking. The plans intend to create a 'properly designed and managed car park facility', according to the design and access statement.
The statement said: "The development has been designed to provide a well-organised and efficient parking facility while maintaining safe vehicle circulation and appropriate accessibility for all users."
It is 'well positioned to serve the surrounding area and the proposal makes efficient use of the available land while ensuring that safe vehicle manoeuvring and circulation can be achieved'.
Five bays will be allocated for disabled parking, along with two ticket machines and a one-way internal circulation system.
Signage will also provide pay-by-phone instructions, allowing users to pay digitally instead of using physical ticket machines, improving convenience and reducing queuing at machines.
The design statement added: "Overall, the proposal represents a logical and practical use of the land and has been designed in accordance with relevant national and local planning policies to provide a safe, accessible and functional car parking facility."
A heritage statement concluded 'the land known as The Orchards has no intrinsic heritage significance and contains no designated or non-designated heritage assets'.
"The proposed car park would have no harmful impact on the significance or setting of the Ponteland Conservation Area or nearby listed buildings. The development is fully compliant with national and local heritage policy," it added.
