AA Platinum Pennant Herding Hill Farm, near Haltwhistle, is widely regarded as one of the leading campsites in Northumberland, offering a range of accommodation including tent and touring pitches, wigwam cabins with hot tubs, adult‑only glamping pods with hot tubs and a luxury hot tub lodge.
Platinum pennant campsites are considered to be amongst the very best in the UK, with all of them being five-star camping sites.

Skirted by the Northumberland National Park and the North Pennines, the site near the Northumberland and Cumbrian border is ideally situated for activity and family holidays, as well as romantic getaways for two.
Having heard positive feedback over the years and seen the site recognised with a number of awards, my partner and I booked in for a two‑night stay at the end of February in one of the site’s adult‑only Castle Pods, which include private hot tub facilities.
Patrick Stewart, the site's general manager, kindly put us in one of the larger and accessible options, which is also pet‑friendly.
Patrick is also general manager of WCF Leisure, which includes WCF's three five-star glamping and camping sites: Herding Hill Farm, Drummohr Camping and Glamping site, near Edinburgh, and Longnor Wood Holiday Park in the Peak District.
Making life all the easier, Herding Hill now has a mobile app for guests to download, which makes it easy to view local attractions, camp facilities, and provides check-in and departure information.
All the staff we encountered at Herding Hill Farm were friendly and helpful, directing us to our Castle Pod at the bottom of the site.
We got our own car parking space directly outside the Warkworth Pod, which was very handy, and the views over the surrounding farmland were stunning, especially during sunset.
The pod was completely private, as we were at the very bottom of the site, so we had uninterrupted views and didn't have to worry about running into other guests or walkers passing our hot tub at any point.
There was a wood-burning stove and an outdoor fire pit, for which supplies are provided, although we didn't use them.
Inside, the Castle Pod was stunning and couldn't have been furnished to a higher standard with everything you need for a getaway.
Guests looking to mark a special occasion can add celebration packs to their booking, which are available at an additional cost, including flowers from a local florist.
Tea and coffee were provided, along with everything you'd need for your stay, from towels and bed linen to a smart television with Netflix, cutlery and plastic flutes for the hot tub.
We walked into Haltwhistle town centre for a delicious meal at the Manor House, before getting back into our swimwear for another hot tub session.
The hot tub itself was perfect, and the best part of the trip was stargazing from its warm waters on Saturday night with a flute (or two) of bubbly.
Additional amenities at this site include an indoor campers' kitchen, an animal petting farm and a sauna.
Herding Hill was awarded the Traveller's Choice 2025 Award by Tripadvisor, and was highly commended in the 2023 North East England Tourism Awards as being one of the best campsites in Northumberland.
Prices for Castle Pods vary. For three nights starting from Friday, Castle Pods are priced at £480 in low season and £600 in high season.
