A wider variety of radio stations will soon be available across Northumberland.
This comes after a group of broadcasters from the area secured an Ofcom licence for Small-Scale DAB (SSDAB).
The coverage area will stretch from Cramlington to the north of Alnwick.
Driven by Northumberland Community Digital, the project will see community radio stations such as Koast Radio, Radio Northumberland, and Lionheart Radio, start broadcasting in digital quality.
The new system will potentially host up to 25 stations, expanding options for listeners.
Richard Finch, one of the main organisers, said: “SSDAB will bring a diverse range of new and local radio stations, increasing listener choice and helping to build stronger communities.
"We’ve already raised almost half of our £60,000 target, but to launch the network, we need urgent financial support from businesses and organisations.”
Radio Northumberland has so far only been available online.
Keith Newman, the station’s volunteer director, said: "DAB will enable us to connect with many more people, especially those who can’t easily access the internet.
"It’s a fantastic opportunity to bring radio to the communities we serve."
Northumberland Community Digital is appealing for sponsorship to help make this service a reality.
