AS spring kicks into gear across the county, we asked our readers where their favourite places were for a family day out in Tynedale, either in Hexham or further afield.

Here's what they said.

Hareshaw Linn, Bellingham

Tracy Whitfield Scandle recommended the Hareshaw Linn walk at Bellingham's popular waterfall, followed by food at Tea on the Train at Bellingham.

The route is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), designated for its rare ferns and lichen.

More than 300 different types of mosses, liverworts and lichen can be found. The site is also home to red squirrels, great spotted woodpeckers, redstarts, dippers, badgers and Daubenton’s bats.

The Sele Park, Hexham

Andrew David Robson suggested a stroll in The Sele and around the bandstand. The park and gardens also feature a skate park, children’s play area, and public toilets.

Leaplish Waterside Park, Kielder

The Waterside Park is one of three visitor centres at Kielder Water and Forest Park.

It was recommended by Brian Tilley, who said: "Leaplish Waterside Park Kielder. Chaffinches that eat off your hand, free bouncy pillows and soft play, free popcorn and the best fish and chips I've tasted in years."

Activities at the park include archery and junior archery, table tennis, fencing, plus gymnastics for younger kids.

Oldman Bottom, also known as Old Man’s Bottom, Sinderhope

Ray Bather suggested this site which is located in East Allendale.

"Lovely place for walks and a picnic, part of the arts trail and for a paddle or even a dip when the water’s deep enough," he said.

The local beauty spot is a ford with wild flowers and a wood.

Allen Banks and Staward Gorge, Bardon Mill

He suggested walking from Allen Banks to Plankey Mill, which was revealed in 2022 to be one of the UK's top picnic spots.

Spring temperatures at Plankey Mill average at 9.5 degrees, reaching highs of 18.4 degrees.
