A resident of a Hexham care home has celebrated her 106th birthday, attributing her longevity to strong genetics.

Margaret ‘Peggy’ Holmes, who lives at HC-One’s Acomb Court Care Home, celebrated with 'the best surprise party that the northeastern market town has ever seen'.

The party, held on March 6, was graced by residents, caregivers, and family members.

Margaret, fondly known as Peggy, has had a 'fascinating' past, including a career as a professional dancer.

She has previously shared the stage with the likes of Danny La Rue and TV icon, Betty Driver of Coronation Street.

Being a woman of many talents, Peggy worked in the ship-building industry painting ships in Wallsend during the Second World War.

Marriage and children led her to leave the entertainment industry, starting a new career at the Newcastle Pottery Factory.

The surprise party was met with rave reviews from the birthday girl herself.

After witnessing a musical performance, devouring a delicious buffet and enjoying a homemade cake made by the care home’s kitchen team, Peggy said: "What a lovely surprise, I didn’t even know there was a party!"

Peggy also received a card from King Charles III and Queen Camilla which added to her delight.

Peggy believes in the power of genes when it comes to longevity.

She said: "It’s in your genetics, my granny was 105 and it runs in the family!

"We all live long, happy lives."

Her fellow resident, Joan March, said: "What an amazing lady Peggy is.

"I am glad she enjoyed her party; it’s been an absolute delight."

Darrell Wilmot, care manager at the care home, said: "From all of us here at Acomb Court, we would like to wish Peggy a fantastic birthday.

"We were so thrilled to celebrate such a special day with her!"
