Hexham MP Guy Opperman's recent visit to a high school saw students grilling him questions about his job.

He visited Ponteland High School to speak with Year 10 students who asked about how he represents constituents in the area and his day-to-day job in the House of Commons in Westminster.

He also met three aspiring Members of Parliament, including Rosie Bell and James Hickie, Members of the Youth Parliament representing Northumberland, as well as Isabella Samples about her campaign to be Northumberland's next youth representative.

Mr Opperman said: "Ponteland High School continues to go from strength to strength since its recent £43 million rebuild and it's clear to see the difference the new facilities are making to the life chances of pupils at the school.

Hexham Courant:

"Rosie, James, and Isabella are all incredibly impressive and a real credit to the school.

"Their passion and desire to help their local community really shone through, and I have no doubt that if they put their minds to it, they each have a successful career in politics ahead of them."

Stefan McElwee, headteacher, said: "The students enjoyed an engaging discussion with Guy.

"We are grateful for opportunities for our young people to better understand issues around democracy and the rule of law; Guy's visit has certainly provided a great insight for our students into the economic and social issues affecting our local community."
