North East dog owners are being invited to join a 60-mile dog-walking challenge to fundraise for Stand Up To Cancer.

Supported by Crufts, the challenge seeks to get people and their pets traversing the distance, whether it's a brief outing with a young puppy or a long hike with a seasoned stroller.

The distance, or whatever represents a personal challenge, can be completed throughout April.

The aim is to accrue funds in support of life-saving research.

Registrants for the event will receive a free dog bandana.

Optional full kits, featuring dog beds, cushions and bobble hats will also be available from the Stand Up To Cancer shop.

Lisa Millett, a Cancer Research UK spokesperson, said: "'Walkies’ has always been a powerful word, but now we’re giving it new meaning.

"With around 17,600 people diagnosed with cancer every year in the region, we’re asking the dog walking community to do something ‘paw-some’ this April that could help make the next research breakthrough happen."
