Tributes have been paid to Father Mark Whelehan following his death.

Born on May 8, 1926, in Kilbeggan, he was ordained as a priest in the Order of the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ (Passionists) on February 28, 1954.

Father Mark made his journey to Minsteracres in Northumberland in 1965.

He served as novice master for 25 years, guiding the spiritual formation of many.

He died on February 29, 2024, one day after his 70th ordination anniversary, at the age of 98.

Known and remembered for his strength and love, those who knew him said: "He was a man of faith, non-judgemental and full of love."

His remarkable courage and almost childlike trust were evident.

Dr. Camille Mazarelo said: "Witnessed great bravery and submission to pain, never to his heroic degree."

Father Mark was known for transforming severe pain into humour, getting people who witnessed his spontaneous gasps and cries when experiencing acute pain to downplay them as something trivial to be laughed at.

Some might have said he was "living in denial," but those close to him saw it differently, saying "he lived for the happiness of those around him."

His influence extended throughout the community, including the local shop in Minsteracres, marking a 60-year contribution that will be deeply missed.
