Hexham MP Guy Opperman recently visited the local Ukrainian community in Northumberland.

The 'Homes for Ukraine' scheme saw the UK Government help relocate Ukrainians amid the ongoing conflict in their homeland, which began in February 2022.

The MP was greeted at Hexham Abbey by Ukrainians and members of 'Hexham Help for Ukraine.' This local volunteer group was established in February 2022 to offer guidance and support to the new arrivals, assisting with access to NHS services and local employment avenues.

During his visit, Mr Opperman was shown the 'Tapestry of Life,' a new piece of artwork at the Abbey.

Created by Ukrainian artist Yuliia Achkasova and 14 volunteers, the tapestry symbolises the unity between Ukraine and Northumberland, using iconic imagery from both regions.

It will be on public display until Friday, March 29.

Wendy Brady, a volunteer at Hexham Help for Ukraine, expressed her delight at the project.

She said: "It has been wonderful to be part of the journey of the 'tapestry of life' over the last six months and realising Yuliia Achkasova's vision."

Mr Opperman also reflected on the day, saying: "'It was a genuine pleasure to see some of the same faces I helped resettle in Northumberland through the Homes for Ukraine scheme two years ago."

He further praised the local community's warm response, saying: "Northumberland's response to the war in Ukraine still fills me with pride to this day, and it warms the heart to see the Ukrainian community fully engaged with day-to-day life in Northumberland."
