People in the north east who are interested in becoming a magistrate can register their interest.

Applications for the current window closed at the end of February but anyone who would like to take on the role can still register their interest for the next application window.

This initiative by the Judiciary of England and Wales and the Ministry of Justice encourages locals to serve their community and registration can be done at www.icanbeamagistrate.co.uk

The move is part of a national drive, aiming to bolster the ranks of voluntary magistrates across England and Wales, particularly from underrepresented groups.

Contrarily to common belief, no legal qualifications, degree, or experience is required for the role.

The flexible part-time position is suitable for anyone aged between 18 and 74, offering comprehensive training and ongoing legal support.

Primary school teacher, Sean, a magistrate for over 15 years, said: "It’s really important that the bench is representative of the society.

"Fairness is at the centre of being a magistrate.

"This means listening to the evidence and deciding on the facts, usually with two colleagues.

"I’d encourage anyone who shares this view on the importance of fairness to apply.

"It's so rewarding; there is a real sense of satisfaction in serving the whole community in this way."
