A NEW cafe will be opening in March.

Grant Cameron, 27, from Brampton is the new owner of The Garden Hexham on Hallgate next to the Old Gaol and has ambitious plans for the premises.

As well as opening a 'hatch' takeaway coffee counter up to serve customers outside, he is hoping to become a social gathering place for book clubs, 'knit and chatter' groups and any other groups who want a place to meet up.

He is also hoping to bring a 'vintage' look to the town with second-hand furniture and 70s-style coffee mugs.

"I have a lot of plans, but right now, the main one is to make sure everything is ready so that we can open next month," Grant said.

"Not only is the cafe a great place to run my own business after working all over the country in pubs, but it is almost like home.

"Since I was little, my family and friends have always met in this cafe in Hexham, and it has a very special place in my heart.

"Last year, when we visited, I thought how amazing it would be to own the business.

"So, later that night, I happened to glance on Rightmove, and there it was: a sign.

"I had always dreamed of opening a business and always loved the vibrant town of Hexham with its many visitors and welcoming residents compared to other towns where the high streets are bare.

"I am aware that there are many coffee businesses in Hexham, but business owners in Hexham do not compete with each other, and I know that I can ask for help, and I would do the same for them.

"Everyone is welcome in the cafe, and we will have plenty to offer to include everyone. We will have delicious smoothies and plenty of gluten-free options, and we can serve alcohol as we do have a license permit.

"I want it to be a place where everyone can feel comfortable and relaxed, such as for mothers to breastfeed and visitors with their four-legged friends."
