A Ukraine-born artist now residing in Hexham will launch her community project that symbolises the town's strong connections with the Ukrainian community at Hexham Abbey.

Yullia Achkasova, who moved from to Hexham in 2022, made a design of an intertwined oak and a sycamore tree, resembling Ukraine and Hexham.

The project, called the Tapestry of Life, began in September 2023.

It encouraged local participation with each person designing a small element of the overall composition.

The collective creation allowed for deep sharing and the forming of deep connections with each other.

The finished tapestry will be unveiled at the Peace Journey event on February 23.

Beginning at 7.30pm, the event will explore through visual art, performance and music, the theme of wars.

The Peace Journey continues into the following day with a silent walk, 'Peace Dawn', slated for 7.30am on February 24.

Participants will walk from the bandstand to the top of Sele Park's hill, followed by a community breakfast in the Abbey.

Residents wishing to attend either part of the Peace Journey can RSVP through the Abbey's website at www.hexhamabbey.org.uk/events.
