NEW alarms have been fitted at the level crossing at Bardon Mill station to the 'satisfaction' of local farmers.

National Rail fitted the alarms this week to help 'increase' safety for people using the level crossing, but there has been some concern about the loud alarm sounds potentially spooking horses or stock who cross it.

A National Rail level crossing manager has spoken to local farmers who are satisfied with the system.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “The new level crossing warning devices have been installed and are set to be tested over the weekend.

"The new system is designed to increase safety for people using the level crossing.

“The sound of the yodels will be adjusted to a volume slightly above ambient background noise level to keep noise disruption to a minimum for local residents.

“This system is in place in various parts of the country and is effective in its operation at level crossings.”

Testing will be on over the weekend, and someone from National Rail will be there to answer any resident's questions.
