Homecare workers in Northumberland will benefit from a council scheme ensuring competitive pay.

A growing number of home care providers have signed up to the eight commitments in the Northumberland Guarantee, with Northumberland Council set to support the associated costs.

Among these commitments is the assurance of a minimum income of £12.54 per hour for most homecare work.

This sum, higher than both the National Living Wage and the Real Living Wage, will be paid in full, including the times when care worker travels between visits.

The Guarantee also means home care workers have the option of a contract that provides them a reliable weekly income, along with potential opportunities for additional hours and earnings.

The scheme also covers a 45p per mile rate for caregivers commuting between visits and ensures pay for time spent on training.

Northumberland County Councillor Wendy Pattison said: "Home care workers who visit people in their own homes to provide them with care and support are carrying out one of the most important jobs in the health and care system.

"This is what makes it possible for many ill, disabled, or older people to maintain their independence and dignity.
