Haydon Bridge pupils outsmarted their rivals at a Newcastle University problem-solving event, claiming the top two spots.

Organised by the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics and led by current undergraduate students, the event was designed to empower year 10 and 11 students by enhancing their ability to tackle problems and analyse solutions.

The students, who are aiming to get grade 9s in their GCSE mathematics exams, were also given a glimpse into future higher education opportunities open to them as gifted mathematicians.

The success of the Haydon Bridge senior teams has set high expectations for their younger year nine peers competing in an event in June.
