SCOUTS planted an oak tree in the Abbey grounds over the weekend.

Robert Hubbuck, a scout historian, organised a tree-planting ceremony on January 27 at the Abbey grounds in Hexhamincolving 1st Hexham Scout Group.

Robert said: "What a quietly momentous day it was, in keeping with our great country, England. Our founder, Lord Baden-Powell, I’m sure, would have been suitably impressed by our planting an oak tree for future generations. For it was he who uttered the immortal words 'from a small acorn, a mighty oak tree will grow', and so it was, and so it is.

"I was extremely pleased the appropriate people were in attendance to witness the symbolic act of planting one tree in the heart of our Scout District of ‘Hadrian’, whilst many troops are planting thousands around Tynedale."
