THE Met Office is predicting a very cold day with a chance of snow in Hexham and across Tynedale today.

The forecaster warned of a chance of snow and rain at midday. During the afternoon, the chance of rain will drop again into an overcast and chilly evening.

There will be highs of 3C and lows of -5C, with the sun due to set at 4.13pm.

A weather warning for snow and ice covering Northumberland is in place throughout today (Tuesday) and tomorrow (Wednesday, January 17). The Met Office warn that a mixture of sleet, snow and ice could cause travel disruption.

There is a small chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.

"Snow showers affecting the Pennines, followed by longer spells of rain and snow.

"Snow mainly confined to high ground leading to some potential disruption. Maximum temperature 3 °C.

"A cold, cloudy evening with a mix of light rain and snow at times. Snow mainly confined to high ground.

"Skies clearing by dawn with cold icy stretches developing."
