A NEW beer has been created to plant new trees in memory of the fallen Sycamore Gap tree.

First & Last Brewery, based in Bellingham, has produced the Fallen Giant 4.5 per cent pale ale with brewer Ric Lee, who designed the recipe for the beer, which is now available in local pubs, bottle shops, the brewery's taproom and shop or direct from its website.

Sam Kelly, co-owner of the First & Last, said: "Like many people, we were shocked and saddened by the felling of the tree at Sycamore Gap on Hadrian's Wall. We decided to channel our feelings into positive action. 100 per cent of the profits from this beer will be donated to the Woodland Trust to plant new trees."

The tree at Sycamore Gap, estimated to have been hundreds of years old, was felled overnight in what police believe to be a deliberate act of vandalism, from September 27-28.
