A book celebrating the history of Hexham’s High Street has been launched at an event at Hexham Library.

The book, titled 'Objectivity', was devised and penned by Penny Grennan and features an array of items procured over time in the town, accompanied by their backstories.

The book's debut was attended by those profiled throughout its pages as well as representatives from Historic England and Northumberland County Council.

The publication is part of the Hexham High Streets Heritage Action Zone scheme. It uses personal stories to shines a light on the shops, past and present, that have been doing business in the town throughout the years.

It showcases a host of rare items, including Hextravaganza, Hexham's Monopoly style board game, and others such as clothing, a sculpture, a fossil, furniture, ornaments, musical instruments, and even a garlic press.

Northumberland County Councillor Jeff Watson, cabinet member with responsibility for culture, said: “The book will help to keep stories and memories alive in a unique and interesting way.

"Thank you to everyone who took the time to contribute to it.”

Jules Brown, Historic Places Advisor at Historic England, enthused: “This is such a fascinating way of bringing together local heritage and retail therapy.

"It’s a lovely book filled with personal stories of cherished possessions linked to Hexham’s shops and demonstrates the value of our everyday heritage.”

The Hexham High Street Heritage Action Zone scheme (HSHAZ) is part of a £95 million government-funded programme spearheaded by Historic England.

The aim of the High Streets Heritage Action Zone is to unlock the potential held in Hexham's town centre.

As well as using arts and cultural activities, new life is being brought to the historic high streets through repair and improvement work.

These works and activities are hoped to make it a more attractive place for residents, businesses, tourists and investors.
