Daft as a Brush cancer charity will soon shine bright with over a million Christmas lights.

This year's epic switch-on is backed by Tyne and Wear Metro.

The public body Nexus, that oversees the Metro, chooses a charity to support annually.

In 2023, the worthy cause is Daft as a Brush.

Set up by Brian Burnie, the charity aims to give cancer patients free transport for their medical appointments.

With more than one million LED's set to shine this Christmas, each light represents a single cancer patient journey completed by the charity since its creation over a decade ago.

People and Culture Director at Nexus, Rachel Redshaw, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care.

“The Daft as a Brush HQ is just a short walk from Regent Centre Metro station and the lights switch on promises to be a really family fun occasion, if you’re heading there on Metro, don’t forget you can take the kids for free.”

Brian Burnie, who is personally co-funding the cost, said: “I wanted to bring some colour and happiness to the area and with the support of Nexus, the light show will be a truly dazzling display for everyone to enjoy.”

The free event starts at 5.30pm on November 16.
