With the end of British summer time, mountain rescue teams are urging hill-goers to "be Adventure Smart".

Amid fewer daylight hours, Northumberland National Park and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Teams, alongside partner agencies, are offering top safety advice.

NNPMRT Team Leader, Iain Nixon, said: "We want people to make a good day better by thinking about some key things."

He emphasised the need for proper planning, including torches, maps, and compasses, amidst the changing seasonal conditions.

He added: "As the clocks go back and we get fewer daylight hours, what people pack in their rucksacks becomes key.

"It’s time to dig out your torch, check the batteries and throw that in your bag along with extra warm layers such as hats, gloves and a fleece."

Mr Nixon also offered advice on what to do in an emergency: "In an emergency, dial 999, ask for ‘Police’ and then ‘Mountain Rescue’.

"A mountain rescue volunteer will give you advice on what you should do until the team arrives."

Clocks go back in the UK on the last Sunday of October.

This is done to make better use of daylight and save energy during the winter months when the days are shorter.
