Storm Babet is prompting a winter warning from the water company.

Northumbrian Water is urging customers to protect their properties ahead of the colder months, following the storm’s severe conditions.

The advice includes necessary steps before temperatures plummet to prevent burst pipes and leakage problems.

These bursts are said to be significantly destructive and can cost up to a staggering £8,800 according to the Association of British Insurers.

Colin Day, Head of Water Service Planning at Northumbrian Water, said: "We’ve seen lots of irregularities with the weather this year, from rainy summers to a very warm start to autumn - and while we have managed to carefully manage our resources through the warmer months, frozen pipes and bursts can have a real impact on local water supplies."

Moreover, Northumbrian Water is seeking public aid to spot outdoor leaks amid the extreme cold.

Mr Day added: "We’re asking that you take care before the cold snap arrives to avoid those costly repairs.

"Customers can also help to play a huge part to help us save water by reporting any leaks they may see when they are out and about."

More water-saving tips are provided on Northumbrian Water's website as the company strives to ensure ample water supply for next spring and summer.
