FREE PARKING: Both on-street and off-street parking in all council-owned car parks in Hexham were to become free, but governed by a time disc, if Northumberland County Council approved recommendations from Hexham Town Council.

COW ATTACK: A 65-year-old woman was airlifted to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary after being attacked by a cow in Wall while out walking with her husband.

FELINE FINE: A six-month-old kitten was rescued from a chimney on Front Street, Corbridge after it fell in while pursuing a bird.

TRAVEL BOOST: Travel agent Hays Travel hoped to open its new store in the centre of Hexham in time for Christmas.

BAN LIFTED: Haltwhistle Conservative Club broke with tradition and started allowing women as members to move with the times.

BOUGHT: Hexham's former Black Mart site was bought by hospital authorities for the long-awaited £23.2 million hospital redevelopment project.

ALL ABOARD: A sponsored doggy paddle travelled down the North Tyne to fundraise for purchasing adapted canoes for people with disabilities.

50 years ago

HOUSING PLANS: Bellingham Rural District Council planned new housing developments at Otterburn, Wark and Birtley. 

FARM SALE: Ovington's 223-acre Village Farm fetched £170,000 at auction in Hexham. 

SHORT CHANGED: Northumberland County Council rebuffed a government offer of £300,000 towards the cost of a new 'all-weather' road linking Haltwhistle and Alston, saying it would need a further £160,000 to meet the total bill for the project.

75 years ago

RENT ROW: Plans by Hexham Urban District Council were to increase the annual rent for the town bus station from £100 to £150, prompting protests from tenant bus company United Automobile Services, which threatened to boycott the station if the rent hike was brought in.

NAME CLAIM: Claims that giving a new housing estate in Corbridge the name of Synclen would confuse postmen were dismissed by parish councillors. Mrs EM Dennison said that there was a cottage of that name in the village already and naming the new estate Synclen would cause confusion.

100 years ago 

COTTAGE SCHEME: North Eastern Railways had three cottages built in Hexham's Wanless Lane, at a cost of £2,000, for retired and disabled railwaymen.  

TRIBUTE: A roll of honour commemorating villagers killed during World War I was unveiled at Wall Reading Room.

125 years ago

IN LINE: Hopes that the long-sought Alston Weardale train line might be on the way were raised when North Eastern Railway engineers carried out a survey of the proposed route. Had it been built, this line would have linked Alston and Eastgate, taking in Allenheads and Rookhope en route.  

150 years ago

FOURSTONES FATALITY: John Brown, 36, a workman at Fourstones' lime mills, died after being knocked over by a wagon there.

RABIES ACTION: A dog suspected to be rabid was shot in Ovingham, as was another dog it had bitten. Elsewhere in the district, Thomas Newbegin was sued for shooting a Skye terrier in his home village of Broomhaugh. The action taken by the owner, William Glover of Dilston near Corbridge, was dismissed as Hexham County Court accepted Mr Newbegin's claim he believed the dog to be mad.
