The Hexham District Music Society's 2023-24 season kicks off on Saturday, October 14 with a gripping performance by the young Pocket Sinfonia.
The Queen's Hall Arts Centre will be the venue, embracing the musical flair of the quartet at 7.30pm.
Regarded for their stylish orchestral classics interpretations, the Pocket Sinfonia are a harmonious quartet for violin, flute, cello, and piano.
Their Shakespeare-inspired programme for the society encompasses masterful renditions of Prokofiev’s ballet, Romeo and Juliet, and Mendelssohn’s enchanting score for A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
“We’re delighted to be welcoming the Pocket Sinfonia to Hexham,” said Joan Peugniez, chair of the society. “The Telegraph has acclaimed their playing as bursting ‘with the energy of an orchestra’.
"We can’t wait to hear it live on stage in two of the best-loved pieces in the classical repertoire.”
Reviving the 19th-century practice of composing chamber music versions of famed orchestral works, Pocket Sinfonia expertly imitates the private performances' atmosphere with sheer zest and spontaneity.
The concert opens with a seldom-performed overture by Mendelssohn's sister, Fanny.
Subscription tickets, giving access to all six concerts of the 2023/24 season, are available online, with single tickets purchasable through the Queen's Hall box office.
