A new, comprehensive dictionary of Northumbrian dialect, featuring 1,250 local words, has been launched by The Northumbrian Language Society.
The definitive guide provides Standard English translations, core vocabulary essentials for surviving in the region, and an overview of Northumbrian's linguistic heritage.
The book is touted as being great for newcomers to Northumberland and Durham counties as well as natives aiming to reinvigorate their vocabulary.
Society chairman John Davidson said: “The counties of Northumberland and Durham have a rich variety of dialects ranging from the gentle Northumbrian 'burr' to the harsh and often humorous vocabulary of the 'pitmatic' used in mining communities.
“Sadly, many dialects fall by the wayside as speech becomes more standardised and we believe it's important that a working knowledge Northumbrian is kept up and that's why we have published the dictionary.”
Sold for £10, the linguistic lifeline 'A Northumbrian Wordhoard' can be purchased from independent bookshops or the Society's website shop.
