U-TURN: A year after closing, outdoor clothing firm Millets reopened its Hexham store on Fore Street.

TYNEDALE TOURISM: Tales From Northumberland with Robson Green featured the Roman Wall, a trip to Kielder and herding sheep with Elsdon shepherdess Emma Gray.

MASTERPLAN: In an ambitious masterplan, Northumberland County Council planned to build new estates at Hexham, Prudhoe and Ponteland, as well as hundreds of homes at Allendale, Bellingham, Corbridge and Haydon Bridge over the following 15 years.

NEW HEAD: Prudhoe Community High School appointed its new headteacher Robin Casson, aged 43.

SCOOP: Father and son John Mavin, 59, and Trevor, 29, from Heddon-on-the-Wall, scooped a share of the £1.1 million lottery jackpot won by a syndicate.

WEDDING BELLS: Ivan and Audrey Bell married in St Oswin's Church, Wylam, in 1953 before emigrating to Australia. On their wedding anniversary, they returned to Wylam, and enjoyed a surprise blessing of their marriage by Reverend Tom Emmett in the church where they tied the knot.

50 years ago

VICTORY: The battle to have the Upper North Tyne Valley flooded for use as a reservoir was finally won by the Northumbrian River Authority. Secretary of State for the Environment, Hexham MP Geoffrey Ripon announced Kielder Water was to be created.

CONTROVERSY: Haltwhistle Rural Council supported Northumberland County Council's controversial decision not to oppose the closure of the Haltwhistle to Alston railway line.

75 years ago

WAR MEMORIAL: A memorial to old students of Samuel King's Grammar School in Alston who lost their lives in World War Two was unveiled in the school hall by Miss Blackett-Ord.

TELEVISION: Hexham's first religious service on screen was conducted in the West End Methodist Sunday school following the ordinary evening service. 

100 years ago

TAX: Organisers of the Allenheads agricultural show at Burnfoot abandoned the sports section in a bid to avoid paying entertainments tax. 

DECIDER: In a crucial match that decided the championship of the West Tyne Cricket League, Haydon Bridge were beaten by 19 runs by Clara Vale. 

125 years ago

HIGH TECH: At the annual distribution of certificates and prizes at the technical education centre at Corbridge, it was stated 11 of the 19 pupils who enrolled had gained certificates.

GOOD DIVIDENDS: The quarterly report of the Co-operative Society in Prudhoe and West Wylam showed sales increased by £196 per fortnight to a total of £14,000. From profits of £2,698, a dividend of 2s 10d in the pound was made. 

150 years ago

STRIKE: Every single man employed as a separator at the lead works at Allen smelt mill and Rookhope went on strike after their request for an increase in wages was turned down. Workers were being paid 4s 3d for seven-hour shifts and were asking for 5s.

 COMPLETE: Work to fill in the large Hexham Abbey windows with what was described as 'beautiful stained glass' was completed. Many people thought the Abbey's beauty would have been enhanced if the windows above the altar were also filled.
