Miguel Almiron scored again as Newcastle United shared the spoils with Chelsea in the Premier League's summer series.

The Toon took on Mauricio Pochettino's side in the early hours of Thursday morning at the Mercedes Benz Stadium and continued their unbeaten record in the US with a 1-1 draw.

Eddie Howe's side drew 3-3 with Aston Villa earlier this week and take on Brighton on Saturday in their final game of the USA tour, having already beaten Gateshead and Rangers in pre-season.

After experimenting with a five-at-the-back formation against Villa, Howe rotated to the back four which started much of last season.

Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn were at full-back, with Fabian Schar and Sven Botman continuing their partnership in the heart of the defence.

Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton started alongside 17-year-old Lewis Miley in a midfield three, with the teenager catching the eye with another strong performance, a few months after he became Newcastle's youngest player against Chelsea on the final day of the season.

Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, and Miguel Almiron started as the fluid front three.

Despite the changes at the back, there was another slow start from Newcastle on Thursday, as Chelsea took the lead after 12 minutes.

Ian Maatsen fed a beautiful through-ball to summer signing Nicolas Jackson, and he slotted a first-time finish past Martin Dubravka for 1-0.

Schar was then forced off through injury just after the hour mark and was replaced by 19-year-old Alex Murphy, who came close to levelling the scores when his header was kept out by Kepa.

However, the Toon would find an equaliser before half time, as Anthony Gordon's strong run and pass found Almiron, and the Paraguayan calmly found the bottom corner with a trademark finish.

The winger was a popular scorer, on what was a return to Atalanta's home stadium following his move to Newcastle from the MLS side in 2019.

Newcastle threatened another early in the second half, but Miley's effort was tame after Isak's mazy run and cutback found him on the edge of the box, while substitute goalkeeper Nick Pope was also kept busy on his return to action.

The former Burnley man was on hand to keep out two of his England teammates, providing a strong hand to efforts from Conor Gallagher and Ben Chilwell in the latter stages.

The result leaves Newcastle fifth in the summer series table, with the final game against Roberto de Zerbi's Brighton to come on Saturday at 00:30 am UK time.
