A new play based on real experiences within care homes is set to tour the North East of England.

Beyond Caring, which runs between October 7 and November 5, is written by Christina Castling and directed by Jonluke McKie, offers a candid and poignant look at life inside a care home.

It is a co-production between Gala Durham and Queen’s Hall Arts Centre.

Based on interviews conducted with residents, relatives, and staff members from care homes in the North East of England, the play aims to uncover the realities of caring for others, self-care, and the process of aging.

Through the perspectives of characters Queenie, Elaine, and Alex, the audience is invited to explore the laughter, sadness, outrageousness, and difficult conversations that take place within the corridors of Cedar Point Care Home.

Judi Earl portrays Queenie, a resident of the care home who stages a protest because she wants to have a tab without supervision.

Jacqueline Phillips takes on the role of Elaine, whose mother is considering moving into a care home.

Alex, a carer at the facility, is brought to life by Rosie Stancliffe.

Writer Christina Castling said: “In 2021, as part of the research and development phase of the play, I interviewed carers, residents and their relatives at care homes across the North East of England to better understand the reality of life working, living or supporting someone living in a care home.

"Alongside fascinating conversations with academics, social workers, and care home managers, the result is a play that shines a light on often hilarious and hard-hitting experiences and asks crucial questions about ageing, identity and adult care provision.”

Dr Clare Winter, a Counseling Psychologist at the Care Home Wellbeing Service, said: “Covid19 tragically demonstrated how the needs of older people, their relatives and carers can be forgotten if not championed.

"It is vital for today’s society that older people’s stories are truly heard and valued. This is a timely and necessary project.

"I believe that Beyond Caring champions our carers’ work, gives them an authentic voice and can be a real vehicle for reflection that is much
needed.”

Those in Hexham who are interested can see the show at the Queen's Hall Arts Centre on Wednesday, October 11, at 7pm.
