A SHOP selling ethically traded goods has opened on Market Street.

Bohemia, a business selling products from Nepal and India, opened on Saturday, August 5 in Hexham.

The business opened in the premises which was previously home to the closed fair trade goods supplier, Gaia.

Sarah, 60, is from Gateshead and Will, 58, lived in London and Brighton before moving to the North East 11 years ago.

Sarah and Will also own a shop in Heaton called Festival and said they knew they wanted to branch out into a market town as a long-term plan.

"It was on our honeymoon we decided to do that and we got back and saw the premises of Gaia was available. It was just a perfect fit for us. It all happened very quickly," she said.

"Will has been a festival trader for 30-plus years. I used to be a teacher before I started trading with him and together we've been doing it for about 10 years."

The pair traded at festivals until the Covid pandemic stopped in-person events.

"After Covid, we opened the small shop in Heaton and Bohemia is our second shop. I think it's going to be a bit more boutique than Festival, because we will have a much wider customer base.

"We're bringing another independent shop to Hexham, we're serving a popular need. There's a real desire for the things Gaia sold, we're bringing a bit of colour with a lot of brightly-coloured block prints and some well-priced, decent-quality clothing.

"The money customers spend with us will go back to our suppliers in India. The more we make, the more we can buy from them. It's a very positive way of trading," Sarah said.

She added she can't wait to be part of the community and said they are 'very lucky' to be able to fit in as a new business.

Sarah said: "Come and visit us and see what we've got to offer. You can be confident that what we're selling has been traded ethically."
