Newcastle United continued their preparations for the new season with a 2-1 win over Rangers at Ibrox on Tuesday night.

Eddie Howe's side travelled north of the border to take on the Gers in a game that also served as a testimonial for goalkeeper Allan McGregor, who left the Scottish giants this summer after making more than 400 appearances across two spells.

Sandro Tonali would make his eagerly-anticipated Toon debut following his summer transfer from AC Milan, while Allan Saint-Maximin was left out of the squad, as rumours about a potential move to Saudi Arabia continue to swirl.

The former would play a big part in Newcastle's opening goal on the night, playing a one-two with the impressive Elliot Anderson, who teed up Miguel Almiron to make it 1-0 with 16 minutes on the clock.

Tonali continued to dazzle with his passing range in front of a packed-out Ibrox as the Toon dominated possession, with Todd Cantwell's late effort the only real chance of note for Michael Beale's side in the first 45.

Howe rang the changes at half-time, with 17-year-old Lewis Miley introduced in midfield, while fellow academy youngster Joe White came on just after the hour mark.

It was two of the more experienced members of Newcastle's squad who were at fault for Rangers' equaliser however, as Sam Lammers capitalised on a slack pass from Karl Darlow to Bruno Guimaraes to make it 1-1 in the 64th minute.

With the full-time whistle fast approaching, the Toon showed the quality and desire that was ever-present last season, as Alexander Isak crossed for January signing Harrison Ashby to head the winner past Jack Butland on 87 minutes.

The success follows on from last weekend's 3-2 comeback win over Gateshead, with Chelsea next up in the USA on Thursday, July 27.
