A BUILDING usually closed to the public will be available to tour during the summer holidays.

Have a look around, find out more about the poor inmates’ daily chores and their bleak diet.

The tour will start at 2.30pm from Hexham Old Gaol and involve a 15-minute walk to the House of Correction.

The House of Correction tour is included in the admission to Hexham Old Gaol. Because of very limited numbers booking is essential.

Due to the nature of the building, only the ground floor of the House of Correction is accessible to wheelchair users.

For those wishing to visit Hexham Old Gaol in addition to the tour of the House of Correction, it is recommended you arrive at Hexham Old Gaol at around 45 minutes before the tour time to allow you time to explore the museum.

Rowan Brown, chief executive at Museums Northumberland, said: "The House of Correction in Hexham really is a remarkable building, that is usually closed to the public. We are delighted to be able to offer guided tours throughout the summer and share its grim history and the stories of some of the people who were rightly, or wrongly, imprisoned there."
