HEXHAM MP Guy Opperman has encouraged people to use the new 'Way of Light' walking route between St Oswald’s Church north of Acomb and Durham Cathedral.

The route starts at St Oswald’s Church near the Heavenfield battle site before travelling to Acomb, Hexham Abbey then through the Northumberland countryside to Blanchland Abbey, founded in 1165.

The trail was officially unveiled alongside five other 'Northern Saints Trails' in September 2021 and is based on ancient pilgrimage routes.

The route is designed to bring the fascinating stories of the region’s saints to life whilst showcasing the best of the North East’s landscapes, heritage, attractions, food, and drink.

Guy Opperman MP said:“It was fantastic to meet with Rev Helen Savage in Blanchland to discuss the enormous benefits of this new walking and pilgrimage route between St Oswald’s and Durham Cathedral.

The trail enables visitors to explore our wonderful countryside in Northumberland whilst supporting brilliant local businesses like the Lord Crewe Arms in Blanchland.”

Rev Helen Savage said: "The Northern Saints trails is a wonderful initiative that will bring many more people to enjoy the amazing scenery of Tynedale and beyond, explore the gem that is Blanchland and help ensure that our communities secure a sustainable future."
