Look back with us at the memories of when excitement spread through Tynedale over the anticipation of the London Olympic Games in 2012.

11 years ago, many residents took part in the torch relay as it passed through the district.

The torch was paraded through towns and villages throughout the UK ahead of the London 2012 Olympics, with it passing through Tynedale on June 16, 2012.

As part of day 29 of the relay, the torch was passed from Gateshead to Durham and was handed over at Prudhoe, Stocksfield, Hexham and Riding Mill before heading over the border into Consett.

 Hexhamshire teenager Josie Hart  carried the torch through Hexham while Prudhoe resident Wendy Neal paraded the torch through her home town.

Ovingham Middle School pupil Sam Smith, then aged 12, was the youngest person from the area chosen to carry the flame.

Sam, of Wylam, who has Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy, would carry the torch through Ashington - the day before it hit Tynedale - on June 15.

Former Prudhoe High School student, James Caroll was chosen to carry the flame through Alnwick. The then 24-year-old from Stocksfield was teaching in Seoul, South Korea, at the time.

The late Hexham footballing hero Doug Robson was also delighted to be selected as a torchbearer - he did his stint at Gordon in the Scottish Borders.

Other local residents carrying the torch included Hexham resident Vicki Dillon and Jess Colburn, of Allendale.

Leading up to the Olympics, 300 children from St Mary's St Joseph's the Sele and Hexham's Queen Elizabeth High School took part in the Big Dance a World Record attempt on the day the Olympic Torch arrived in the UK.
