THE return of a much-loved family event attracted record numbers and secured its place as an annual event once more - as organisers plan for 2024.

Hundreds turned up to enjoy the 53rd year of the Ovingham Goose Festival in the sun on Saturday, June 17 when it returned for the first time after the pandemic.

On the day, visitors enjoyed the line-up of entertainment, and local craft stores, and savor local delicacies.

"The traditional procession started on Pack Horse Green this year with the ancient proclamation read by distinguished thespian and Goose Fair veteran, Jim Wardle on Vicarage Haugh," Dean Bowen. a Goose Fair Organiser said.

"Old favourites The Northumbrian Pipers’ Society, The Hexhamshire Lasses, The Hexham Morris Men, and Hexham Brass performed in the open and were joined this year by the rock legend puppet that is Jimi Handtrix and the phenomenal Danny 5’s Danger Show which brought gasps of horror and joy to the assembled crowd.

"As well as the excellent walkabout performers, Sarah, the stilt walker, and Paul, the Magician, there was a second stage this year where the line up included cabin dwellers, Will and Paul, local singer-songwriter, Sam Shields, The Uplifted Women’s Choir and Hexham folkies The Cherry Pickers, who headlined.

"Ovingham Scouts were also out in force and along with the fantastic Ovi-Fun group, they provided endless fun activities for the youngsters, while The Whittle Dene CIC taught people woodland crafts and Ovingham Allotment Association brought along their very popular and hilarious Human Fruit Machine which was not be missed.

"Ovingham Community Orchard, The GO Local Food Cooperative, St. Mary’s Church, and Ovingham Parish Council were also represented. Ovingham First School PTA ran the tea tent, while the Ovingham Reading Room committee provided the bar.

"It was a great afternoon had by all. Teddy Parker, 5 years old of Greenside said it was the second-best day of his life. Roll on 2024. The fair is back for good."
