TWO sisters are flying the flag for the county and country in golf competitions.

Ponteland High School students Zara and Charlotte Naughton are celebrating their success in competitions - and being selected for separate national teams.

The sisters are students at Ponteland High School and members of Ponteland Golf Club. Charlotte is 15 years old and Zara 17 years old.

Charlotte was selected for the England Under 16s team to compete against Spain at Hunstanton Golf Club, Norfolk, which was a huge achievement as Charlotte was the youngest member of the team.

The England team were victorious over Spain for the first time in eight years.

Speaking about it, she said: "It was the best experience. I am working extremely hard to try and gain further selections for the England team."

Earlier this year, both sisters also competed in the Northumberland Ladies County Championships at Hexham Golf Club, where the girls qualified in first and second place after 36 holes of stroke play.

With both girls winning their quarter final and semi final match-play games they faced each other in the final.

The match was level through 5 holes then Zara took a 2-hole lead through holes 6 to 9. With Charlotte putting incredibly over the back nine, Charlotte then edged ahead of Zara by one through holes 11 to 14.

The match went all the way to the eighteen where Charlotte managed to hold onto her one-hole lead to take the championship.

Looking forward, Zara has her eye on the ball after qualifing for the National Schools U19 Finals, where she will travel to Bristol later this month to compete in the national finals with the aim of being selected for the England Schools Team.
