A WOMEN'S Institute celebrated its centenary this month (May).

Catton WI marked its 100th anniversary on Monday, May 15 in the village hall.

A spokesperson for the WI said it was a 'wonderful evening'.

"We opened the festivities with sparkling wine and canapes. Margaret Robinson, Catton WI president, welcomed members and former members, and visitors from the WI Board of Trustees.

"The entertainment was varied and great fun. We laughed, talked, sang with the fabulous Notelettes, a local singing trio, and ate the most delicious food.

"We premiered a short film, featuring some of our members recollecting fond memories, sharing stories and providing their thoughts and hopes for the future of Catton WI."

They said the oldest and youngest members of the WI cut the birthday cake made by a member, which was decorated with photographs from the archive and then followed by a rendition of Jerusalem.

"We were thanked as we were leaving with a lovely memento, featuring some of the important campaigns the WI have been involved in over the last 100 years.

"Thank you to everyone who made this an unforgettable and very special night," they added.
