PRUDHOE Drill Hall is set to be demolished.

It comes after Northumberland County Council (NCC) has identified a contractor to bring down the building most recently used as a gym.

The demolition of the hall, on Swalwell Close, is expected to happen in the near future.

An NCC spokeswoman said: “We served notice on April 24 to have unsafe and broken glass removed from the property. This has not been complied with and so the council is arranging for this work to be carried out.

“We don't yet have a start date on site for the demolition as we are working to finalise the contract.”

Guy Opperman MP added: "I am pleased that following multiple site visits and a campaign with residents, NCC is taking action to protect the public by securing the site.

"Prudhoe residents are fed up with this dangerous eyesore.

"I want to thank officials at NCC for progressing this difficult issue."

Work to build six four-bedroom, three-storey houses on the former Territorial Army hall began in December 2018 but stopped unexpectedly, leaving the site vacant and falling into disrepair.

In December last year, magistrates granted permission for NCC to carry out improvement work on the land, which is listed for sale, under the Building Act 1984 Section 77 in respect of a dangerous building or structure.
