MEMORIES and photographs have been shared of an influential family's history.

Susie Stafford, maiden name Temperley, shared her family's history spanning hundreds of years.

Her great-great-grandfather, William Angus Temperley, built Westfield House in Hexham which is now known as the Hydro building belonging to Queen Elizabeth High School.

Temperley House now houses the Abbey Dental Practice and the Granary apartment block above it.

Susie has used the site Ancestry.co.uk to research her generational family tree and has accessed census data to confirm dates and places of residence.

WA Temperley was born in Hexham in 1820 and died in 1898, and is buried in St Andrew's Cemetery.

Susie said he lived in Westfield House once it was built with his family in 1861. By 1871, he was living in Temperley Place, which is a group of terraced houses on Hencotes.

She explained he owned all the Temperley Place properties.

She shared photographs from an album of the garden at Temperley Place, dated 1898.

A fountain was installed in Hexham marketplace called the Temperley Memorial Fountain, which is now a monument.

Susie has searched for information on the Temperley family but has struggled to find more details.

Her family moved south several generations ago and Susie returned to the Tynedale area a few years ago.

She discovered William Angus Temperley had 11 children and is hoping to find any surviving descendents.

"I'm the last one that was born a Temperley on this side, but there are hundreds more."

"I think he was friends with Lord Allendale at the time who was a Beaumont. Between them, they worked hard to get things going in Hexham."

Joseph Temperley, a brother of WA Temperley and corn merchant and land owner, lived at Temperley Grange in Corbridge and died in 1891.

Susie said neighbours of the Temperley family, the Ridley family, also appear in the Temperley family tree.

She said it's 'interesting to learn where you come from' and hopes people who may be her relatives get in touch with her on Facebook.

"I have met a sixth cousin once removed who lives in Alston," Susie said.
