WALKS are taking place to encourage outdoor activity.

Free wellbeing walks are taking place across Tynedale encouraging people to get out into the outdoors and improve their health.

The walks meet in Hexham, Stocksfield, Wark, Ponteland, Corbridge, Bellingham, Prudhoe and Haltwhistle.

They are led by friendly volunteers, vary in length and wherever possible, leaders will tailor walks to the group’s requirements and abilities.

Wear sensible footwear and appropriate outdoor clothing and bring a drink if it is hot.

Walking is a low-impact exercise shown to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, dementia, stroke and some cancers.

Northumberland County Councillor Jeff Watson, cabinet member for healthy lives, said: “Going for regular walks is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to become more active and improve your health.

“Some of our walks are short and very gentle so if you’ve had problems with your health or are new to walking, don’t worry, we’ll help you to get started.

“Our group walks also offer people the opportunity to explore their local area, meet new people and make more friends. I would encourage anyone who may be interested to give them a try.”
