A RARE piece of Hexham history has been passed to Tyne Valley Auctions.

Auctioneer Gerard Connolly was given a copy of the 1988 monograph 'Ecclesia Hagustaldensis: the Abbey of St Andrew, Hexham' from a woman whose partner recently passed away.

The author, architect Charles Clement Hodges, notes in the volume that it is the third of only 42 copies of this work which remained complete in 1930.

Hexham Courant:

"It's a very large volume, in size it's 22.5ins x 15.5ins," said Gerard. "It's not what we'd call a pocket-sized book!

"It's got some fantastic information and plans for Hexham Abbey. It really is a beautiful book.

"It's a very interesting piece I think for the local market."

He added the monograph is in "excellent condition".

Tyne Valley Auctions recently moved into new premises at Vallum Farm earlier this year, having previously operated out of Corbridge.

The business auctions online with The Saleroom and Easylive Auctions, but their new space allows people to take a look at their unique items - including jewellery, paintings, furniture and books - in person.

Hexham Courant:

They also offer a 'buy it now' facility within the saleroom. If there is no auction online, people can purchase an item directly.

Gerard also runs the cafe next door, Viewpoint, which opened at the end of February.

The cafe, which has extensive outdoor seating as well as 14 indoor seats, offers a range of sandwiches, scones and traybakes, as well as hot drinks.
