PLANS for a new bar and restaurant in Ponteland have been given the green light.

A planning application seeking permission to convert The Old Police House on Bell Villas into a restaurant was submitted to Northumberland County Council towards the end of 2021.

The building has been vacant for several years now but was most recently used as office space.

In a document submitted alongside the application, agent Simon Mcilwraith, of Collective Design, said: "The proposal looks to bring vitality to the area but also new jobs, tourism and more money through economic growth."

He added: "The overall design looks to retain the charm of the existing building. The vast majority of the building remains as it is. Alterations have been made to improve the aesthetic of the building or for commercial reasons."

Ponteland Town Council had objected to the plans, citing a number of concerns related to noise, congestion, and parking.

But approving the scheme subject to conditions including suitable delivery and collection times, planning officers said: "The proposal would see the loss of an office but alternatively would provide a restaurant that retains employment; attracts visitors and provides a new facility within Ponteland.

"The proposal would enhance the range of services and strengthen the vitality of the town centre and in a sustainable location on a brownfield site. The proposed restaurant with bar is a main town centre use and therefore is suitably located."

There will be a small outdoor seating area between the Sainsbury's car park and the footpath by the main road.

An initial proposal to add a garden area with seating to the rear of the building was removed from the application due to noise and disturbance concerns.

A premises licence application for the restaurant has already been approved.
